SIP handsets – compatibility queries and musing

Remember when you had to buy a matching handset and phone system from the same vendor? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that handsets were traditionally a good way to make money as part of a one stop shop complete solution. And allow end users to compare one supplier with another in a clear way. SIP changed all that right? The short answer is yes. Well, maybe. On quick reflection there’s usually a caveat or two as to why you’d pick a particular handset for a particular job and manufacturer compatibility plays it’s part. You can mix and match but often need some experience and expertise to get it right, hmmm. Therefore it’s a new game with more choices in theory and practice, but has the power swung to the handset vendors versus the switching system / PABX / hosted platform vendors?
