Here’s a quick definition
A Gateway is a unit that converts the signalling protocols ISDN30 or ISDN2 to SIP (for inbound and outbound calls). It usually sits alongside your existing phone system.
What does this mean?
This signalling conversion will allow an existing business phone system (PBX) that currently connects to a BT ISDN service to connect instead to a Gateway unit. In turn the Gateway can be connected to the new network service (SIP) that is widely available from many service providers.
Bottom line?
- You can keep your existing PBX
- You add a Gateway unit alongside
- You enjoy the likely cost savings of using SIP services versus ISDN
- You keep focused on your business and not distracted with Telecoms changes
